A sofa's character is largely set by its fabric. The same frame and the same foam give a completely different result in a different cloth. Below we compare the three most popular groups.

Velvet

It reflects light softly and gives a living room depth and richness, with a soft hand. In return, the pile shows marks and needs regular brushing. It is not the first choice for heavy-traffic, easily soiled areas.

Linen and linen-look fabrics

Natural, matte and calm. It breathes, which makes it comfortable in warm weather. Pure linen creases easily and is sensitive to stains, so linen blends with a stain-repellent finish are usually preferred.

Chenille

The choice for durability. Its tight weave resists abrasion and stands up to heavy daily use. The surface is lightly textured and reads as warm. This is the group families choose most often.

So which should you choose?

Three questions will usually settle it:

• How many hours a day will the sofa be used?
• Are there children or pets in the home?
• Will the sofa sit in direct sunlight?

Heavy use and children point to chenille; gentle use and a refined look point to velvet; a natural, understated feel points to a linen blend. In sunlit positions, choose fabrics rated for colour fastness.
